I look forward to celebrating Ms. Abbot's legacy by watching the #IUWBB play tonight! See you soon!
The "Mother of Women's Basketball," Senda Berenson Abbot, was born on this date in 1868. While teaching physical education at Smith College, she organized and officiated the first women's basketball game ever to be played. After meeting with the inventor of basketball, Dr. James Naismith, she wrote an official rulebook for women's college basketball, and its popularity grew with hundreds of teams cropping up nationwide within a few short years. In 1985, she became the first woman to be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. - Ms. Magazine, Facebook
